At 3pm our neighbors down the street at Americana Music Academy host an all levels Open Jam – this great jam is a perfect way to start playing with others or hone your chops and just have a great time. Here at our own store, Mass Street Music, we’ve got free clinics on many different topics on Saturday afternoons – just check out our Events page for the latest. Over on 9th St at JJ’s Beautiful Music Violin Shop you can jump into the ongoing violin lessons on some Saturdays – taught by fiddle wiz Tricia Spencer. Just give them a call at 785-856-8755 for the next scheduled free lesson.

SUNDAYS

Our buddy Darrell Lea throws down regularly at 6:00 p.m. at Papa Keno’s downtown, which is always a great time, plus you know, you can get a great slice. Every Sunday at 5:30 you can find a great Irish Session upstairs at Henry’s Upstairs (on 8th St). The first Sunday evening of every month you can check out the monthly Gothic Cowboy Review at Frank’s North Star Tavern in North Lawrence. This is a great chance to check out local singer songwriters (including our own Eric Mardis sometimes) as they try out new material.

Larry Carter’s great and diverse Tuesday Concerts Series is back in action at the Lawrence Arts Center. This is a really great, intimate and inexpensive way to take in a variety of Celtic, folk, Americana and other music though I can vouch that they’ve always got some surprises up their sleeves. Don’t miss the April 22 show when six acts celebrate Bob Dylan’s 70th birthday with a full show.  If you’d rather be playing music on Tuesday, stop by the Slow Ride Roadhouse in North Lawrence for Lonny Ray’s Jam from 6-10pm. The newest Tuesday jam is hosted at The Bottleneck, at 9:00 pm any Tuesday there is not a scheduled concert. Led by Snaggletoof of Deadman Flats, this is an eclectic jam open to anyone 18 and over. The next one is happening April 29 and they’ll be having some cool raffle/giveaways during the jam too.

WEDNESDAYS
Hit the Jazzhaus for the Acoustic Jam led by Tyler Gregory – he’s back from tour and leading the jam every Wed. at 10pm. The Gaslight Gardens just over the bridge in North Lawrence hosts a diverse jam which starts at 6pm. Cutter’s Smokehouse in Eudora also has a great jam on Wednesday nights. The great Cajun music that has been a part of Johnnie’s in North Lawrence continues its legacy the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month.
