February 2018 - Mass Street Staff Picks

Josh BaldridgeTom Anderson Electric Guitars - T Icon Classic - Transparent Brown
We did something we don't often do with the pickups on this one with a tv2 and tv1 being the most vintage of pickups, with the VA boost delivering a little more meat when you need it. With the standard setting it's so clear you can get back to that late '60s british tone. Eric and I were handing it back and forth the other day and the two of us fell head over heels in love with this guitar. I've got a feeling this is going to be one of my favorite Anderson's of all time, you could search all across the universe and never find a better guitar. Dig it.

Jim Baggett – Collings Acoustic Guitars - D1 Traditional T Series
This D1 Traditional is an awfully nice guitar, sounds great, plays great and is very comfortable.

Eric PutnamCollings Electric Guitars - I-30 LC - Aged Faded Cherry
The I-30 is my new favorite Colllings electric guitar. It is one of those guitars that can do about any thing I want it to. It has enough output, and twang to pull off rock, blues and country licks, but would also be at home at a Jazz gig. The bridge pickup is aggressive without being too thin or bright. The neck pickup is clear but has a nice roundness to it. It is also one of the lightest and most comfortable guitars to come through the shop.

Collings Electric Guitars - I-30 LC - Aged Faded Cherry

Matt Pelsma – Eastman Acoustic Guitars - E6OM
The Eastman E6OM is a comfortable player with a clear and balanced tone. It's hard to get a bad tone out of a hand-made instrument that has been put together so well. The guitar I am currently holding has a gorgeous piece of Mahogany on the neck under a satin finish. Not a buzz on the fretboard, the tone is anything from bright to buttery smooth.

Eastman Acoustic Guitars - E6OM

Check out our current collection of Eastman Guitars.

Brian Soden – Eastman Mandolins - MD615 SB
Eastman makes such a fantastic mandolin and this model happens to be my favorite. The maple back and sides give it a nice chop, plus its gig-ready with a pickup installed right out of the gate. I'm planning on picking one of these up soon, myself!

Eastman Mandolins - MD615 SB

Mike Horan – AER Amps - Compact 60/3
I've been using this amp live for the last couple years with a Gypsy Jazz combo, micing up my guitar with a lavalier-style condenser. I am continually impressed by its clarity and trueness of tone. Great amp!

Trey DurkinFender - Rumble 200
A great amp for any level player, from a performing professional to a bedroom thumper. Super portable, lightweight enough to bring to any gig, even if you had to hike through the slush and snow to get there. Just a solid all around bass amp with a lot of eq-ing possibilities. 200 watts for me is enough for most playing situations, except maybe the loudest drummers. I like this model with the 1x15" speaker on it's own, but combined with a 2x10 or 4x10 cab it competes with higher end stacks no problem.

Fender - Rumble 200

Susan Willits - Collings Mandolins - MF GT Sunburst
We have another wonderful mandolin from Collings! Beautiful, clear notes from high to low on this Collings MF mandolin. Superb build quality, as with all Collings instruments. It's a winner!

Matt KappenmanFender Electric Guitars - American Original 50's Stratocaster - White Blonde
When Fender announced the new American Originals line I couldn't help but get excited. After seeing them at the NAMM show and now in the shop, I feel justified in my excitement. I'm a sucker for anything vintage-inspired, especially so with a nitro finish. Nice chunky neck with some classic Strat tones.

Josh BaldridgeGretsch Electric Guitars - G5420TG Electromatic - Candy Apple Red
I’m a sucker for Candy Apple Red guitars, especially with this classic Gretsch headstock. These Black Top Filter’Tron pickups do that clean, low output Gretsch sound so well.

Eric PutnamBlack Cat - Stereo Black Cat Vibe
Running the Black Cat Vibe in stereo is an awesome sound! Univibe in mono is already a great sound, but when you run it in stereo you get all of the watery goodness of a vibe, but with the extra width, and you can really hear the pulse of the vibe between the two amps!

Black Cat - Stereo Black Cat Vibe

Matt Pelsma – EarthQuaker Devices - Hoof Reaper Fuzz V2
Sometimes super-stacking fuzz pedals get a bad rap for being too-over-the-top in out of control tone and wild sounds. That's not the case with the Reaper Hoof. Very usable at any setting, this pedal will save you space with combining two pedals, plus a choice octave effect. Rich and punchy or thin and loose, add a sonic boost to your tone in a ton of ways.

EarthQuaker Devices - Hoof Reaper Fuzz V2

Brian Soden – Greer Amps - Lightspeed Organic Overdrive
If there is an overdrive pedal worthy enough to have the word "organic" in it's title, this is definitely it! It truly feels and sounds like a cranked-up amp under your fingers. Full and rich. I like!

Mike Horan – Waterloo by Collings - WL-K

Matt Harmon – Fishman Amps - Loudbox Mini Charge

Trey DurkinLeo Posch Banjos - Dobson Style Banjo
What a sweet little banjo. The short 24 1/2" scale lends to a very touch sensitive banjo, it also handles tuning up to A or D very well because of this. Melody notes up the neck ring like a bell. And what a cool old rim, too!

Leo Posch Banjos - Dobson Style Banjo

Susan Willits - Lakota Leathers Guitar/Banjo/Mandolin Straps
We have a great assortment of guitar, banjo, mandolin & ukulele straps, including many fun colors and patterns from Original Fuzz! Eric PutnamCollings - I-35 LC - Pelham Blue
First of all the finish on this guitar looks amazing. Depending on the lighting you get a light metallic Pelham blue or even a royal blue. This guitar will look fantastic under stage lights! Besides being one of the best looking guitars to hang on our wall, it also plays and sounds great. The Wolftone Dr. Vintage set has the right balance of clarity and output and will work in a variety of situations. Great guitar!

I've been hunting around for a more appropriate old-time guitar the past few months and this E10 00 SS is very appealing. Short scale, slope-shoulder, comfy to play and a nice Adirondack top that makes for big sounding little guitar. Eastman is still quietly making some of the best solid wood guitars around.Eastman Acoustic Guitars - E10 00 SS

Josh BaldridgeMartin Acoustic Guitars - D-21 Special
This Limited Edition has solid Rosewood back and sides, 1-3/4" nut, and forward shifted/scalloped bracing! At $2,499 this guitar is a great deal on an American made guitar, I just wish Martin was making more than 300 of these.

Eric PutnamJetter Gear - Gold Standard
Still the only overdrive pedal on my board. I have had one of these for the last 5 years, and cannot find a drive that works better for me. The low gain side is very responsive to your pick attack, and sounds very open. The higher gain side is great for leads, really fat but clear. If you stack both channels you can get into fuzz territory. Great pedal!

Jetter Gear - Gold Standard

Matt Pelsma – Taylor Acoustic Guitars - 326e Baritone-8 LTD
I am a sucker for exotic instruments, especially if they play just like a familiar instrument. Baritones are cool, but with some extra octave in the middle strings, you get some depth that lends itself to some drone-y textures along with single-string lines up the neck on the first and second strings. You can bend with some 12-string flair underneath!

Taylor Acoustic Guitars - 326e Baritone-8 LTD

Check out our current collection of Taylor Guitars.

Brian Soden – Gretsch Electric Guitars - G5420T Electromatic - Fairlane Blue
Such a killer guitar for any price level, but it happens to sell for well under a grand! The fret work is fantastic and the overall build is very solid. Throw in a set of TV Jones pickups and you have a true hot rod!!

Mike Horan – Gibson Guitars - 1952 J-45 Sunburst - Used

Matt Harmon – TV Jones Pickups - Brian Setzer - Nickel
Once I bought Brian Setzer's Rockabilly Riot: Osaka Rocka! - Live in Japan 2016 I was hooked on his tone. So much that I bought a Gretsch with Filtertrons. Brian's tone is amazing and so are these pickups.

Trey DurkinAll the Bart Reiter Banjos
We have too many great Bart Reiters right now to pick just one! All these banjos are very well made, up in Lansing, MI, and each one would be a lifetime instrument. Whether you like a 11" head with a whyte laydie tone ring, an all maple banjo, or a 12" pot with rolled brass and mahogany neck, there is something in right now for all players looking for an open-back. I personally play a Bart Reiter Round Peak, and it is all the banjo I could ever want. Check out the 12" Buckbee for a banjo that will be very similar in sound to my Round Peak.

Susan Willits - Leo Posch Acoustic Guitars - L-M
The Leo Posch L-M is a no frills guitar that has killer sound and beautiful, understated looks. Clear, balanced notes from high to low, with enough power and volume to be heard in any type of musical setting. Nice ebony peghead overlay, sunburst top, and firestripe pickguard to dress it up a little! Comes with a Guardian Featherweight case.

Matt Pelsma – Martin Acoustic Guitars - 2017 D-28 New
Even though it's new for 2017, this is one of the most warmest guitars I have played out of the box. Very open and clean, this guitar has what most people are looking for on first pickup.

Brian Soden – Greer Amps - Moonshot Class-A Treble and Mid Pre
What a fantastic take on the classic treble booster! I sat down with the Moonshot and a handful of guitars with a JTM45 style amp and had an absolute blast dialing up tones. The Treble/Mid knob makes this treble booster so guitar-friendly! Love it!

Mike Horan – Collings Acoustic Guitars - C10-35 Jet Black Top
A great little guitar with a big voice and a real nice mid-range honk not usually characteristic of Collings. It has the looks and charm of an old L-00 but with great playability and intonation.

Matt Harmon – Alexander - Jubilee Silver Overdrive
Great tones with a very versatile EQ section. This one belongs in your British pedal collection.

Trey DurkinBlueChip Flatpicks
These picks offer the perfect connection between your hand and your strings. The pick attack is as smooth as glass, with an edge that won't wear down. They draw a rich, full tone out of instruments that you just have to hear to believe. The effect is particularly noticeable on acoustic instruments. These picks have spoiled me. If I use another pick I feel like I'm not getting the most out my instruments. These picks were a total game changer for me when I first tried them, and now I am a full convert.

Susan Willits - Huss & Dalton Acoustic Guitars - 1999 CM Custom Used
This 1999 Huss & Dalton CM Custom is a beautiful guitar. It's easy to play with a full, deep, warm sound. A well cared for guitar with nice appointments, including flamed maple binding on the body and fingerboard. Sweet! Comes with a hardshell case.

Matt KappenmanWaterloo by Collings - WL-14 L T-Bar - SB
I have Waterloo fever...there's just something about the dry, woody tone of these 14-fret models that has me day dreaming about old-time bass runs. If you've been chasing that '30s Kalamazoo sound these guitars are the a fantastic option. Built at the Collings factory down in Austin, TX, the build quality far surpasses so many of the old catalogue guitars that inspired Bill Collings and Co.

Josh BaldridgeEastman Electric Guitars - SB59 Goldburst
This Eastman nails the look and vibe of a classic solid-body guitar. The Seymour Duncans sounds great, chimes without being too dark. The body produces plenty of sustain without being too heavy. Great guitar and affordable.

Jim Baggett – Collings Acoustic Guitars - D1 Traditional T Series

Eric PutnamTom Anderson Electric Guitars - Icon Classic - Mystic Teal
Our very own Matt Pelsma has been trying to decide what color to paint his walls. I have been suggesting Mystic Teal. What a great look for your walls or a guitar! Besides the looks I also love the combination of the PH-2 in the bridge with the SC1 single coils. The PH-2 is not as far from a single coil as a humbucker would be, but it is a great way to get a fatter bridge sound while still having plenty of chime.

Matt Pelsma – Gretsch - G5622T Electromatic Center Block w/Bigsby - Georgia Green

Mike Horan – Waterloo by Collings - WL-S Deluxe
Oh man! I have to pick the Waterloo WL-S Deluxe. After getting a chance to hear Beau Bledose play it at the booth in Winfield I am a true believer. Really excellent antique tone with great string separation when finger-picked!

Trey DurkinChuck Lee Banjos - Fretless 12" Open-Back
What a great banjo! A fine example of the wonderful craftsmanship found in Chuck Lee's Banjos. A first rate fretless banjo with as full, warm and, mellow of a tone as any old time banjo picker could want. This instrument has a fantastic cut and drive with steel strings, but could easily handle nylons. It handles clawhammer or fingerstyle equally well, and retains a lovely voice throughout the range of tunings, which are achieved hassle-free thanks to the planetary tuners.

Chuck Lee Banjos - Fretless 12 Open-Back

Check out our gallery of banjos in the shop!

Susan Willits - Collings Mandolins - MT2
Another wonderful mandolin from Collings, this MT2 has great tone, with clear, defined notes whether played softly, or with a lot of volume. The Eastern Flamed Maple back and sides are beautiful, but I especially love the velvety sheen and depth of the figuring on the back of the maple neck.

Collings Mandolins - MT2

Matt KappenmanMartin Acoustic Guitars - 2017 D-28
Any time one of our builders announces a redesign I sit up and take notice. I've always leaded more towards mahogany back and sides but there's something about this build and bracing that gives it the bass responsive of rosewood with the punch of the new D-18s. It's a great combination and I honestly can't put this one down.

Josh BaldridgeFender - 2017 American Professional Precision Bass - Candy Apple Red
This American Professional P-bass brings a classic color to the American Pro lineup. I'm a sucker for bursts and red guitars and this one fills the latter slot nicely. Also, the professional series are now the only stock Fender models to come with Rosewood fingerboards so don't miss out with rosewood becoming more scarce.

Eric PutnamCollings Electric Guitars - CL Deluxe Cherry Sunburst
Leading up to the August 21st eclipse there were many warnings about not looking directly at the sun, and I will issue the same warning about this guitar. I looked at it too long and woke up blind...with the desire to play classic rock riffs, and do rock n' roll high kicks. Another great guitar from Collings. Nice beefy neck, and the Wolftone legends sound excellent in it.

Matt Pelsma – Waterloo by Collings - WL-14 X Truss Rod - Boot Burst
Every Waterloo that has come through the store has had its own little amount of magic... that is to say, they all are supremely built, but each one is a little different. The WL-14 Boot Burst is prime example of the best Waterloos that Collings is making, plus in a super cool Western Texas finish.

Trey DurkinOme Banjos - 2009 Sundance Megatone Bluegrass Used
Whoo! This banjo rocks. Look out! it is loud and powerful, without being harsh or thin. The feel, clarity and intonation up the neck is fantastic, and makes me want to play all the fun high-up licks and chords. I would describe the sound as rich, warm, and full, but nowhere close to muddy. This Ome Sundance is a gorgeous straight-ahead bluegrass banjo that could handle just about anything thrown at it. My open-back would be jealous if it knew how I felt about this banjo...

July 2017 Staff Picks - Collings Edition

This past month Master Luthier, and close friend of the store, Bill Collings passed away after a battle with cancer. We thought we'd take this months' staff picks and turn it into a tribute, showcasing some of the fine instruments Bill and his team have crafted over the years. Feel free to share any of your favorite Collings instruments or stories in the comments below.

Josh BaldridgeCollings Acoustic Guitars - 2007 D2H Brazilian Baaa A
I have had two guitars that I wish I had bought before they left the store. One came back and I bought it the same day, the other was a 2007 Collings D2H BaaaA. It had all of the best traits of a Brazilian Dread, a full low end, bell like highs and a present midrange to match. Around the store we refer to a few guitars as being "piano-like", and this was one of those guitars. It might not be for everyone, but I still wish it had been for me. Bill Collings' dedication to building fine instruments for players will be appreciated by us all for as long as guitars like this continue on...thanks Bill.

Collings Acoustic Guitars - 2007 D2H Brazilian Baaa A

This Brazilian D2H that we have in-stock is almost the exact same build as the one that got away, even down to the year! Check it out

Jim Baggett – Collings Acoustic Guitars - D-45 Custom Brazilian Serial# 1000
When Jim placed the order for the 1000th Collings he told Bill and the guys in the shop to trick it out with every appointment possible. With inlays all over and some gorgeous Brazilian back and sides, this custom dreadnought is every bit a testament to the quality, and craftsmanship that Collings has always delivered. It's fitting that the case project is now in full swing production, and this dreadnought feels right at home in one of Bill's traditional cases.

It's hard to get more special than serial number 1000.

Eric PutnamCollings Electric Guitars - 290 DC - Orange
This 290 is the perfect Rock n' Roll guitar. Great feeling neck, and as always from Collings, the fit and finish is perfect. It is also the best looking 290 I have ever seen!

Matt Pelsma – Waterloo by Collings - WL-S Deluxe
This guitar is right in the party line with how Collings can design a throw-back style guitar and expertly craft a new instrument that not only plays and sounds phenomenal, but looks newly individual and classic at the same time. I couldn't believe it until I saw and played the WL-D Deluxe. It's no wonder these things don't hang around long. We have one on order that should be arriving soon!

Brian Soden – Collings Acoustic Guitars - 1993 OM2H
This amazing OM2H belongs to my long-time band mate and great friend, Gary. He purchased this guitar brand new from Mass Street Music in 1993. I've been playing music with Gary for close to 20 years and this guitar continues to impress me in the studio as well as on stage. It sounds just as incredible as it looks and has a ton of stories it could tell!

Collings Acoustic Guitars - 1993 OM2H

This OM is serial# 1001! Next in line right after Jim's D-45!

Mike Horan – Collings Acoustic Guitars - 1997 OM1AV
We purchased this OM1AV in 1997, so this is its 20th anniversary! For all those years it has been Jeanie's only acoustic, surviving countless MAW performances and recording sessions (check them out on Facebook). One of the louder OMs I have ever played, this machine routinely holds its own in jam sessions against guitars twice its size. It marks a milestone in Bill Collings' vision for his guitars, as it is one of the first vintage neck guitars to bear the letter "V" on its label. This era was really the first time he had tried to copy a 1930s-style neck shape.

Matt Harmon – Collings Acoustic Guitars - D1
Thanks to Jim and Mike I had finally understood what made Collings guitars so special and this one just kind of showed up for me at just the right time. This is your basic no frills D1 with a 1 11/16 nut spacing.

Trey DurkinCollings Acoustic Guitars - D1A Traditional
What a wonderful instrument. The most inspirational guitar I have ever owned. Every time I pick it up something new comes out. When I pull it out of the case and set it on my knee, it just feels right, everything about it. Huge, rich tone that could be described as "no-nonsense", from the low E all the way through the last fret high C, with such great playability that I find myself up there fairly often! There's not a bad note on the guitar. The extra thin finish with no sealer coat is beautifully done and will age gracefully. Add the tortoise trim and it makes for quite the looker. I purchased this guitar to have a companion for life, and it has already enriched mine greatly in the 4 months I've had it. Bill and the team really hit the nail on the head with this guitar, and the entire traditional line.

Susan Willits - Collings Acoustic Guitars - 02H 12-String
It's hard to imagine an acoustic music world without Bill Collings. He made a big mark on the hand-crafted guitar and mandolin scene. His drive and ambition will be missed. One of my favorite Collings guitars that we've had in the shop was this Collings 12-string. It was such a wonderful sounding small body guitar. It's nice to have a 12-string that's not huge, but still has a big sound! Another beautiful instrument from Collings!

Matt KappenmanCollings Acoustic Guitars - D1VN
Around four years go, long before I even thought about working at the store, I attended one of Jim's Vintage Guitar workshops. I love old things, whether it's vintage saxophones or old houses or tools...I've always enjoyed things that were built to last. I was looking forward to hearing all about Jim's passion for old guitars, but he threw me a curve ball when the discussion moved to modern guitars that he felt were well built. Collings kept coming up again and again, a brand I had never heard of, but I became a little bit obsessed with it. I started researching Bill and the company and my entire outlook on modern, vintage-inspired instruments changed. I knew one day I would have to have one...and the first would have to be a D1 - Mass Street style - with a wider vintage now neck, no tongue brace and Adirondack bracing. We play ALL sorts of expensive and amazing guitars every day here at the store, but when I go home to play this D1 there's always something new to bring out of this combination of metal and wood.

We have this guitar in-stock, but with a gorgeous sunburst right now. Check it out!

Josh BaldridgeMartin Acoustic Guitars - Custom Shop Dreadnought Wild Grain EIR
Our Custom Shop Martin from NAMM has now arrived! Matt and I had a blast picking out the woodset and putting together a beautiful D-28 Style dread with some hot rodded specs. Adirondack top, hide glue, forward shifted bracing...it lives up to everything I was hoping it would be while choosing the specs.

Eric PutnamStomp Under Foot - Pink Hellephant
First ever custom made pedal for Mass Street Music! The Pink Hellephant is an overdrive, and fuzz in the same enclosure. The overdrive is a low-medium gain overdrive that sounds great with humbuckers, or single coils. The fuzz half is a lower gain version of the Stomp Under Foot Hellephant. They work great by themselves as stand alone circuits, or if you want some out of control fuzz tones you can stack the two!

Matt Pelsma – Zvex Vexter - Fat Fuzz Factory
I have used one of these for the last four months on my board and I love it for really gross, amp melting sounds. Dial in a fuzz that has a glitch-y attack or ride the volume knob for some unique squealing action. The size and artwork is cool, and stomping on the switch is very satisfying.

Brian Soden – JHS Effect Pedals - The AT (Andy Timmons) Signature Channel Drive
Wow! This thing is so addictive. Super rich British flavor with tons of gain on tap. Open chords are clear and balanced, even with the gain cranked up. I'm diggin' it!

Mike Horan – Gibson Acoustic Guitars - 1936 L-50 Archtop Used

Trey DurkinLeo Posch Acoustic Guitars - L-M
So cool! Awesome smaller slope shoulder body with a 13-fret neck joint makes for a unique tone. Strong and bold enough for loud flatpick bass runs, but an even response and treble clarity make it a great choice for strumming and fingerstyle alike. This is a dream guitar for old-time music. It has been tempting me ever since it showed up in the store!

Susan Willits - Leo Posch Banjos - Weymann Conversion
I like our new/old Weymann Conversion banjo. It has a nice, punchy sound and the new neck makes it easy to play. The engraved pinwheel and star inlays are a classy touch, and it's light weight makes it easy to hold on your lap, or to stand and play for hours with no shoulder pain! Comes with a skin head and a Guardian feather case.

Matt KappenmanTungsten Amps - Mosaic Mk II 1x12 Tweed
I love the simplicity of this amp. Volume, tone, two inputs and lots of tube amp tone. Even pushed to breakup it's not overly loud.

Jim Baggett – Martin Acoustic Guitars - 1937 D-18
Pre-war, wide neck, advanced X braced D-18s are so rare it's a real treat to have this one in the store. With the artfully repaired volume and tone holes in the top it actually makes this one a bargain.

Eric PutnamFender Electric Guitars - Classic '69 Telecaster - Blue Flower
This guitar has everything a good Tele should have. A big fat neck, an ashtray bridge, and plenty of twang. It also has a finish that will make you want to get in your flower power bus drive to your nearest hippy cowboy tailor. If you are not into spacemanhippycowboy madness, you can at least appreciate that this guitar will go with any stylish Hawaiian shirt you may be wearing at your neighbors annual summer bbq. Make all of your neighbors jealous of your jaw dropping country/jazz/hillbilly rock n roll licks, or at least of your stylish shirt/guitar combo!

Matt Pelsma – Electro-Harmonix - Canyon Delay & Looper
You can never have too many delays, but this might be the only one you will ever need. For a multipurpose delay, this pedal has a small footprint at a great price. Also, it sounds great!

Brian Soden – Xact Tone Solutions - Atomic Overdrive
Although this unit covers mild to moderate overdrive tones beautifully, don't let the word "overdrive" fool you. It can cross over into VH distortion territory, easily! The EQ section is very powerful and allows you to dial in a great tone no matter what amp you plug into. That feature makes it a perfect grab-n-go drive pedal for any gig or recording session where amps are rented or already provided. Sign me up!

Matt Harmon – Wren and Cuff Effect Pedals - Eye See Pi Small Foot Fuzz
This pedal is my time portal back to the early 90's when my friend Justin introduced me to the Smashing Pumpkins new record Siamese Dream. It totally kills Corgan's Big Muff tone, there are so many great tunes on that record. Riff-a-way!

Trey DurkinK&K Acoustic Pickups - Pure Mini Pickup
We install a lot of pickups in the Repair Shop, and this simple system may be my favorite. It sounds very true to the acoustic tone of your instrument and passive construction means no dealing with 9-volt batteries. Sounds great on it's own, but when combined with the K&K pre-amp it really comes to life. An optional sound hole volume control is also available.

Susan Willits - Gretsch Acoustic Guitars - G9511 Style 1 Single-O Parlor
I really like the new Gretsch Parlor guitars. This is a nice guitar for a good price with a solid spruce top and comes with an Appalachia Cloudburst finish, which may vary slightly between guitars of course. The one we have in the store now has a beautiful finish!
