In the mid-to-late '90s Blazer and Henkes raised the bar on what could be done with a vintage-inspired modern guitar. Utilizing hand-selected, high quality tonewood, thin nitro finishes, hide glue construction and an attention to detail that came from studying the original vintage builds, Rudie and Willi entered in the American guitar world with a bang.
Through our founder Jim Baggett, Mass Street Music was front and center to these guitars as the original dealer to represent Blazer & Henkes in the States and this guitar is a wonderful reminder of why we had such confidence in their builds from the jump.
Originally ordered in 2014 and delivered in 2017, this Phoenix 18 exudes that mid-focused, spruce/mahogany response that we love about vintage D-18s. The European "Moon" Spruce that B&H selected is quick and dynamic with the headroom usually associated with Adirondack/Red Spruce that lets the player lean into the guitar and really drive it while still being pleasant when backing off.
There's a wonderful "bear claw" to this top, that really visually sets it apart from so many 18-style guitars. Custom ordered with a vintage-inspired metal T-Bar, and the appropriate mid-30s neck profile, this feels like an old guitar in the left hand. Thanks to a fret dress, setup and new saddle this Phoenix 18 is ready to play.
Here in Very Good condition, the thin nitro finish has aged gracefully, with a few minor imperfections showing over time, including on the bass side lower bout (see photos).
