This Sherwood Green Collings City Limits Deluxe is truly something special. Featuring a Hoduran mahogany and a premium maple top, this lightweight set neck build is powered by a pair of newly released ThroBak '57 SteelHeads for a fantastic feeling showcase of boutique electric tone.

The wraparound bridge brings a slinky, smooth feel to this CL, delivering a fantastic platform for deep bends, but also a comfortable feel up and down the neck. Deluxe features include parallelogram inlays along with a subtle, but striking, ivoroid package including custom ivoroid pickguard, knobs, pickup rings, truss rod cover and binding. A testament to the build quality and attention to detail from the crew at Collings.

This new set of pickups from the vintage pickup masterminds over at ThroBak delivers a warm, harmonically focused tone to the neck, while delivering a bright, gnarly and expressive tone to the bridge pickup. Based the specific 1957 SteelHead P.A.F.s this set features Long A4 magnets for a full, clear and very musical tone. It's hard not to turn up the gain and let this one rip. The SteelHead name is drived from the use of steel bobbin mounting screws, rather than brass that's used in later P.A.F.s. This slight materials difference leads to a changing of the magnetic field in the pickup, for a unique and rather special character for these vintage-inspired reproduction pickups.

Whether plugging into a modern pedal platform like a Two-Rock or driving a vintage tweed, this City Limits Deluxe absolutely shines, with a character all its own. Includes a free Mass Street setup and a hardshell case.

Our Thoughts

As an added bonus we wanted to include the details on the winding of these pickups courtesy of ThroBak: In 1957 Gibson was new to the humbucking pickup game. Instead of using dedicated P.A.F. pickup winders, Gibson began humbucker production by winding bobbins on their existing KZ-115, P90 pickup winder. To speed production Gibson also started winding humbucker slug bobbins on their one of a kind Slug-101 pickup winder. The result is some '57 era P.A.F. pickups have a screw bobbin wound on the KZ-115 and a Slug bobbin wound on the Slug 101 winder. Fortunately for guitar players the radically different winding patterns of these two machines result in two bobbins, that when combined, create natural coil resistance and frequency spectrum offset that is unique in 1957 P.A.F. era. Both of these one a kind machines that once lived in the 1950's Gibson Kalamazoo factory now live at ThroBak and are used to wind the '57 SteelHead MXV P.A.F. repros to recreate these unique coil offsets. No other pickup maker or guitar manufacturer in the world has this capability. These machines and their tonal signatures are exclusive to ThroBak and ThroBak customers. These two machines to come together for the first time since the 1950's to make ThroBak '57 SteelHead P.A.F. repros.
