We ordered up this I-35 LC from Collings to evoke some serious '60s vibes, reminiscent of the other Kalamazoo brand, and wow did they deliver!
Featuring a host of custom options starting with the Waterloo-inspired "Boot Burst" finish, which absolutely shines on the laminate flame maple top. Subtle appointment choices, including the white guard/white truss rod cover harken back to some of the iconic '60s builds, further complimented by the parallelogram fingerboard and headstock inlays.
The rubber really meets the road when we get to the pickups. Here with a set of Lollar mini-hums, which deliver a slightly punchier, more mid-to bright focused tone, sitting somewhere between a full hum and a single coil, all while still delivering the 60-cycle hum-cancelling properties of the larger humbucker. The sweep of the pots make for a really dynamic, versatile guitar that cleans up nicely when rolled off, yet deliver a ripping bite when pushed.
The '60s neck carve feels comfortable in the hand, and when combined with a bigsby-tremolo there's a loose feel to the strings, which makes for a softer bloom to the pick attack that really shines with these more articulate pickups. The custom laminate construction and maple/spruce center block deliver a powerful, yet airy, semi-hollow vibe that we really can't get enough of. This Collings includes a free Mass Street setup to your specs along with a the original hardshell case.
