This vintage 1927 Gibson Style A Mandolin plays extremely well and has a beautifully open sound with its almost 100 years of history. The Adirondack top and Maple back & sides have opened up and deliver a deep and rich open sound that fills out every note on this oval-hole mandolin. The appointments here are simple featuring a black top, three ring purfling around the sound hole, and binding that all come together for an understated appearance that lets its sound show. The original pickguard is intact and looks absolutely stunning.
A flat fretboard with pearl dots and a 1 1/8" nut width is very easy to play and intonates relatively well for models of this era. In Very Good condition for its near 100 years, this A model features a well-earned checking to the finish, playwear to the guard, and some minor scratches amongst the top and back.
A wonderful, crack-free example with the original hardware present. Comes with the original hardshell case that is in great condition, with a nice replacement handle.
The listing includes the original receipt filled out to a Miss Betty Gifman for the mandolin, dating back to Nov, 1928 for a whopping $62.00. The history of this mandolin is well documented on the Mandolin Archive having been in the most recent owners' hands for the past 18 years.
