This Gibson Guitars - 1935 L-5 Archtop is an absolutely stunning example of the premier vintage pre-war Kalamazoo-made archtop. An early '35 L-5, this guitar retains the original 16" body sought after by so many players today. The quilted maple back and sides are striking, along with the dark sunburst accentuating the carved spruce top. The flowerpot inlay, mid-30s Gibson logo, triple bound body, fingerboard and headstock are all premium features for what was one of the top of the line guitars available at the time. The original gold plated Grover, riveted gear, butterbean tuners are present along with the original gold plated tailpiece. The original bridge sports the 1921 patent date. The 3-piece maple neck has a nice rounded V profile, that feels comfortable up and down the fingerboard. The neck spline near the heel has popped a little, however the neck is stable.

The pickguard has been replaced with a period correct reproduction, which is not uncommon as the originals are notorious for deteriorating. Here with low frets, and moderate fretwear, this vintage archtop can play cleanly with the right touch but would probably benefit from a refret. There is evidence of minor finish touch up on the upper back, along with on the bass side upper bout of the top. Includes the original hardshell case (see photos). Call for in hand description.

Our Thoughts

This vintage L-5 Archtop has the sound. While filming Mike’s marvelous demo of the guitar it was such a treat to hear this 16″ build being played in the musical style it was designed for at the time. Whether it’s a vintage L-5 being played in a dance band, or in Mother Maybelle’s style, or a more modern interpretation, this smaller, earlier version of the L-5 is one of my all-time favorite acoustic archtops.
