Dating back to 1954, this vintage Gold Top Les Paul Standard is a striking instrument. The now classic combination of a single cutaway Honduran mahogany body, paired with a maple cap deliver a resonant build with loads of sustain. The original nitrocellulose finish is present and has aged nicely, showing some wonderful checking to the Gold Top with only minor playwear throughout.
The mahogany neck features a comfortable mid-50s C-shape profile, that feels full without being chunky. The frets, while low, are original.
The pickups are original, and deliver a wonderful Soapbar P-90 tone with a clear, punchy and throaty response when pushed - this is that classic mid-50s Gibson sound. The electronics are original, including the pots and Grey Tiger capacitors. The jack has been replaced, along with the jack plate and a Historic Makeovers replacement has now been installed.
The pickguard, hardware, switch, speed knobs and poker chip are all original, along with the original Kluson "No Line" tuners and buttons. At one point in the guitar's history an aftermarket trapeze tailpiece with installed, and a pair of screw holes remain at the end pin (see photos) as evidence of that change. The original bridge studs remain. Decades ago an era-appropriate, vintage bridge was sourced and installed to return this Gold Top to '54 spec.
All in all, an incredible example of a 1954 Gold Top that we feel lucky to represent here at the shop.
