This vintage 1960 Gibson Southern Jumbo delivers a classic Jumbo sound that marked the end of a era in Gibson acoustic guitar design. Featuring a spruce top over mahogany back and sides, this 14-fret slope shoulder dread is one of the last acoustics out of Kalamazoo to feature a drop-in saddle. While Gibson made adjustable saddles available as an option dating back to the mid-50s, drop-in saddles remained an option up through 1960/61, and are preferred by many players.
Here with a cherry finish neck, back and sides, this SJ was picking up design vibes from the iconic Les Paul bursts of the era, eschewing the brown finish to the back and sides of previous SJs. There is a minor split in the lower bout back brace treble side that is most likely from the factory, is tucked under the kerfing and is stable. There is also a glued, and stable repaired pickguard crack, which is not uncommon on guitars of the era.
A mid-forward, compressed and warm sounding guitar, everything you want in a vocal accompaniment Gibson, this SJ arrives to us in Excellent condition, with the era-appropriate chipboard case. If shipped the buyer is required to purchase discounted hardshell case.
