This 1939 Martin D-28 is the result of seeing the potential in a vintage guitar, and how a thoughtful repair can transform a damaged instrument. For those on the hunt for a players grade, wide-neck herringbone, this guitar is it.
Previously, at one point in the guitar's life, a bridge nearly the size of the repaired area on the top was installed, subsequently failed, and tore up the top surrounding the bridge when it did so. The guitar being in otherwise great condition made it a worthy project for repair, while knowing it could never be made invisible. Saved from a re-top by a our very own Jim Baggett, this repair has been stable for the past 6 years, allowing this vintage, wide-neck D-28 to blossom into an absolutely incredible flatpicking box.
The neck was reset at the time of the repair and maintains excellent playability, with our preferred saddle height. The bridge and bridge plate have obviously been replaced when the top was repaired and new Adirondack spruce was grafted with the original Martin top. There was a small circular patch made as well below the pickguard. The guitar had a refret at the time of the repair and the fingerboard remains at full thickness.
The guitar sounds incredible and is very responsive. The rear-shifted bracing lends itself to a focused, present low-end that avoids any sort of overpowering boom which can often be found on rosewood dreadnoughts.
The repair process was well documented with extensive photos at the time. Please feel free to contact us with questions and an in hand description. Someone else could always elect to re-top the guitar down the line, but Jim's work to save this piece of Martin history has resulted in a fantastic playing and sounding vintage guitar.
