The Kanso is a collaboration between Poly Effects and Josh Smith, offering a fuzz that delivers a wide range of sounds in a new and unique package. This build serves up something much simpler than their other offerings, hence the namesake Japanese word for 'simplicity', yet still innovates on design as Loki tends to do with his creations. One single control footswitch & knob, affectionately titled the "Fknob", mans this entire pedal's controls.
Featuring 4 different diodes for 4 different flavors of fuzz, the Fknob allows you to switch between them by simply holding it down, and switching between a bias and character control for each by double tapping. The bias control acts as a first stage of gain, shaping the tone from a clean boost, to rough distortion, all the way to spitty fuzz. Bias is indicated by a spectrum of blue to red for low to high gain respectively. Character, indicated by an animated purple light, acts as an output control that can push your amp nicely. The Fknob will remember how you set the Bias & Character for each diode so you don't have to reset when you go between diodes.
The four diodes are full of a wide variety of character each. The Schottky diode, Josh's favorite, is bright and jangly with a quick attack that cuts through the mix. LED is a hard clipping distortion that roughs up fast and can really push into some heavy tones. Germanium is that classic '60s warm fuzz that can go from thick blues tones to muffed out fuzz. Silicon is the last one with a tight, focused low end, and plenty of power that is a nice in-between of Germanium's body and LED's hair. Overall, a fantastic offering from Poly Effects that showcases their wonderful ability to innovate even in a small form factor.
