The Enigmatic '82 Overdrive Special Amplifier from Universal Audio is a phenomenal amp in a box pedal bringing the legendary Overdrive Special sound into a small footprint and great price point.
Amp in a box tech has come a very long way since its inception, with cabinet Impulse Responses, or IRs, sounding extremely close to the real thing. These pedals from UA come with three built-in cabinet sims along with additional cabs available through the phone app. The app, via Bluetooth connection, allows for preset building, more customization options, and other features not found entirely on the pedal to keep pedal usage simple and streamlined. This lets the pedal stand on its own with the essential controls so it can be used independently without the app.
Basic controls such as Low, Mid, and High EQ on the bottom three knobs, along with Volume, Overdrive, and Output on the top three knobs. Flipping the middle switch to [Alt] allows for these knobs to control their respective alternative functions. Room controls the room reverb and Ratio controls the overdrive ratio, affecting the drive sound and compression levels. Deep/Mid is a boost to low mid/high mid frequencies, presence is a high shelf boost, and bright changes the value of a bright capacitor, either taming them or getting into icepick-y territory.
Three cabs are available built into the pedal, with 6 additional ones in the app. The leftmost switch goes between a rock and a jazz tonestack, being more aggressive and mellower respectively. Check out the app for more EQ settings, a FET input, gain settings, and a toggle between four different Overdrive Special amps that UA have modeled for this pedal. Overall, an extremely comprehensive pedal that includes a classic, oft out of reach sound for most guitarists all found in a small footprint and at a great price.
